Trout Run Trail Public Art Committee

The Vision Iowa Board has granted $100,000 to Winneshiek County for the acquisition of durable public art along Trout Run Trail.  Trout Run Trail is a 12-mile loop recreational trail conceived by the Trails of Winneshiek group, built and sponsored by the City of Decorah and Winneshiek County, with generous cooperation from the DNR, landowners, contributors and Vision Iowa.  The public art projects are to be used as an impetus to bring in additional donations to the trail project.  To supervise the installation of public art along Trout Run Trail, Winneshiek County and the City of Decorah created the Trout Run Trail Public Art Committee through a 28E agreement.

The TRT Public Art Committee has now selected 40 proposals from 11 artists and is in the process of matching these proposals with donors willing to underwrite the costs.  Click on the pictures below to view each artist's proposals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the timetable for the installation of public art along Trout Run Trail?

  • March, 2008: Trails of Winneshiek Fundraising Committee to match art with donors.
  • April, 2008: Artists notified of a match for art
  • November 1, 2008: Artist/28E site development construction complete
  • April 1, 2009: All public art installations complete.

How many sculptures will be purchased with the $100,000?
That is yet to be determined. We anticipate that in the end we will acquire from 5 to 12 pieces of art. This will be dictated somewhat by what the invited artists submit and what the potential donors like. We will purchase $100,000 in art, but the selection process will depend on what specific art the donors will support.

Will work be purchased from all of the artists in the "pool"?
Likely not. If we invite 10 artists to submit a proposal, and they submit pieces that ‘in total’ would cost $150,000 to acquire, we will not purchase all of the art. $100,000 in art will be purchased. After the Trout Run Trail Public Art Committee and the 28E group have reviewed the art proposals for appropriateness, the art proposals will be shown to potential donors for a match. If a donor wishes to support a piece of art, that art will be purchased. If donors are not found for all of the art, the art committee will make recommendations to the 28E group for purchase of specific art.

If a donor doesn't select my work am I free to use it elsewhere? How long do I stay in the "pool"?
You may use your art elsewhere if not selected. We anticipate that the art pool will be ended by March 31, 2008, but it could be as late as June or July of 2008.

Who pays for the site preparation and installation of work?
The artists are responsible for installation and site preparation. If asked to participate in the pool, the artist will need to include those costs in their total package price.

I'm not an artist but I'd like to help with the project. How can I be involved?
If you are a potential donor for art, please contact Paul Hudson, Harlan Satrom or any other member of the TOW Fundraising Committee.  If you have insight on art and would like your opinion heard, contact one of the members of the art committee--David Bakken, Kathy Bakken, Doug Eckheart, John Hjelle, Mary Holthaus, David Kamm, Kent Kleckner or Yvonne Kulhman.
